Tylney Hall

Wedding photography at Tylney Hall in Hampshire by Neil Palmer

Tylney Hall – I always love photographing weddings at Tylney Hall in Hampshire. This is set in Rotherwick, in the heart of Hampshire, and is a grade two listed mansion. It was built in 1898 and was initially a hospital during World War 1 and then a private school. Today it is now regarded as one of the UK’s most characterful country house hotels and as a wedding venue, is second to none.

Photographically, you cannot ask for a better location. As you approach through an avenue of tall redwood trees and dappled sunlight you eventually arrive in front of the main building. From here you get the most fantastic view of the Hampshire countryside, as well as the Water Gardens and sunken Rose Gardens. You can also view the lake and boathouse bridge. And then a quick stroll downhill to the lake and you’ll get a fantastic view of the main building in all its glory.

Tylney Hall can also cater for small intimate weddings to the much larger grander ones and is also licensed to hold civil marriage ceremonies. Depending on the size of the wedding party, there is the baronial Tylney Suite to the self contained Hampshire Suite with its private bar and walled garden.

I’ve been commissioned for wedding photography in Hampshire at Tylney Hall for several events in recent years. The rooms are always light and spacious and ideal for natural light photography. The same can be said for the ceremony rooms as well where I usually have free reign to photograph the actual ceremony itself. Once the formal family groups have been photographed on one of the many spacious lawns outside, I then like to take the couple on a walk around the grounds. My favourite is to go down to the lake and boathouse and from here I can photograph them with the magnificent building in the background.

I also like to wait just until the light is right, often when the sun is starting to get close to the horizon, what we call in the business ‘the golden hour’. From here we will walk back up to main building and then take some shots around the walled gardens, in the gazebos or on the huge lawns lined by the tall Redwood trees. If the weather is against us then we can go inside and photograph in front of the huge spiral staircase and the large fireplaces. And this is what I like about Tylney Hall – the space and variety of backgrounds. In fact I could photograph weddings there every day and still find something new to capture each time.
